My kind of Filipinos

ONE of the noteworthy results of the Pulse Asia Survey conducted last November was that almost two-thirds (63 percent) of the respondents-where every Filipino had an equal chance to be selected-disagreed with the statement, "This country is hopeless," with 20 percent undecided and only a relatively small minority (16 percent) agreeing. A significantly smaller proportion, but still a majority (54 percent), also disagreed with the statement, "If it were only possible, I would migrate to another country and live there," with 18 percent undecided, and a larger minority (28 percent) agreeing.

Those statistics need a human face, and this column is devoted to Chris and Marivic Bernido, who are exemplars of this majority and whose actions show how deeply they love their country and how much they are willing to do to make it a better place to live in.

Chris and Marivic are not your average Filipino couple. Both have PhDs in Theoretical Physics (State University of New York, Albany) and have distinguished themselves in the field, in the Philippines and abroad, with an international reputation in Path Integrals Method and White Noise Analysis (don't ask me what these are, but they sound impressive). Their names appear as authors or co-authors in the Journal of Mathematical Physics and other international journals. Both were in the faculty (Chris was director) of the National Institute of Physics, University of the Philippines, and both earned "Outstanding Teacher" awards when they resigned in 1999.

It is easy to jump to the conclusion that they left UP for greener pastures abroad. With their qualifications, they could work practically anywhere in the developed world, at salaries at least 10 times the local rates. But if that was what happened, this story would have been about two more Filipinos who joined the brain drain.

Money was not their object. They went back to Jagna, Bohol, (population 30,000) to set up the Central Visayas Institute Foundation with two seemingly disparate arms: the Research Center for Theoretical Physics (RCTP), serving Visayas and Mindanao, and the Central Visayas Institute Foundation (CVIF) high school, originally set up 30 years before by Chris' grandfather, which was floundering. Their primary aim was investment in human capital, more precisely human capital development. It was payback time-to the country they love.

That the RCTP is flourishing should be no surprise, given the backgrounds of the founders. It regularly conducts seminars and workshops for the transfer of technology and knowledge. It helps institutions of higher learning in Visayas and Mindanao improve their research and teaching capabilities, as well as their academic programs, and hosts triennial international conferences which have attracted some of the best physicists in the world, including Nobel laureates. The Bernidos receive no help from the Philippine government for these efforts.

But if the Bernidos' work in RCTP serves as a beacon for physics research and training, their work in CVIF is making waves in the Philippine education circles. The school has been visited by educators from all over the country (the most recent being the consortium of Poveda, De La Salle and Immaculate Conception Academy), and the Bernidos have been invited to expound on what they are doing under the sponsorship of the Fund for Assistance to Private Education.

Why? Because in the course of four years of school administration (principal, director), teaching (General Science, Chemistry, Physics, Geometry) and by firsthand experience, they realized that the traditional teaching methods developed in the West were not effective in the current Philippine context. So they worked out a program called the CVIF Dynamic Learning Program (CVIF Program, for short) which is suitable for the large classes common in the Philippines, requires a smaller number of textbooks, needs fewer science equipment, reduces teaching personnel requirements, is less dependent on the abilities and personalities of teachers, has built-in checks of dysfunctional behavior observed in Filipinos (which they list as: a culture of dependence, underdeveloped virtue of honesty, low standards of quality or the pwede na 'yan attitude, skewed priorities, and a poor concept of time and discipline in keeping schedules). In short, a program that addresses the problems and adverse conditions existing in the country.

And get this, folks: the students have no homework under the CVIF Program (I hope to write more about this in another column).

That the program is succeeding can be judged from what the Bernidos call external checks. First is that for the first time in their school's history, students passed the UP College Admission Test two years in a row: five (out of 12 who took it) in 2003, and four in 2002 (after eight years without any passers). Second is that in the Mathematical Challenge for Filipino Kids Training Program conducted by the Mathematics Trainers Guild (MTG) of the Philippines, the number of CVIF qualifiers rose from one to eight to 10 since 2002-with two of them ranking second and third overall, outranking their counterparts from Tagbilaran City.

How's that performance for a rural high school where almost half of the students had a parent or guardian who did not get past high school? Chris and Marivic dream of some of those students eventually feeding into the Research Center for Theoretical Physics. And they are working hard to realize that dream.

They are my kind of Filipinos.

Tough Love

The Almighty

Take God's love for example . Most love is a two way street . God's is.

God's love is definitely tough love , it's long range , big picture love . If God loves you , you had better pay attention - he has his way of getting to the point ! God's love - biblically speaking is about ( blessings , warnings and curses ) sort of the carrot and stick approach .

Look ...Jericho wanted more time ( who doesn' t ) they were warned. Nope , no answer.

Ka-Boom , was God's response . No Jericho no problemo . By the way , airbags do not really seem to help with God , as Churchill said " it's the kind of mistake you only make once " .

I think the hard thing for me about this story is , I wonder how God feels after the wipe-out .

Me , I'd kinda feel bad actually for the people , but then , I'd think well maybe the next group will have a bit more sense . Hey , who am I to question the big guy. My puny mind against the Creators mind , I may get it wrong then you know , Ka-boom .

Love & Discipline

Hebrews 12:4-13

One of the most powerful verses in the Bible is listed in Hebrews chapter 12.

"FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES, AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES." (Hebrews 12:6).

We have a very difficult time connecting love and discipline. We have a more difficult time with the way it is asserted that every son must be scourged. There are lots of lessons to be learned here as parents and pastors but also for each individual Christian. Let's cover several of these points.

  • "My son" (Hebrews 12:5)
    God deals with His own children different than those who are not His children. A parent only has jurisdiction over his own children. This is true partly because of his intimate concern and understanding of that child. Genuine Christians are His sons. Each of them are brought through a time of discipline.

  • "Those whom the Lord loves." (Hebrews 12:6)
    The Lord loves His children in a different way than He loves those who do not know Him. From this teaching we gather there are two kinds of love: a general love in which His general goodness is displayed and a specific love for His children. God's actions are different toward His children. If they are unconscious of the way God deals with them, then they will not understand God's actions with them.

  • "He disciplines." (Hebrews 12:6)
    We might wonder why it is the Christian He disciplines rather than the non-Christian. "Is not the Christian better?" The question is wrongly asked. We are better because we are disciplined but still have a long way to go! Discipline is the means that we are better able to do His will. We are deceived to think that His children do not need discipline. Have we found a child among us who needs not discipline? Is your child naturally bent to do good? Doing good is something that we are trained to do.

  • "He scourges." (Hebrews 12:6)
    The Lord gets rough with His discipline. He does not just let us sit idly in a corner. Scourging has the idea of an actual beating with some object. There is no question that no one likes getting a scourging, but it is this actual fact that makes it useful in keeping us from doing foolish things again. If we had not done it in the first place, we would not have received a scourging. In actual fact, a quick and patient spanking can change a child's attitude from haughty to humble in just moments. We will not find this true of 'non-aggressive' means. The purpose is to keep the child from greater foolishness in the future.

  • "Every son whom He receives." (Hebrews 12:6)
    We like to think that not every Christian faces these reproving scourgings. We think they are only necessary once in a great while. Only the most naughty need the scourging. Surely not the refined and learned ones. However, we are totally wrong. If we are God's child, He would scourge us. God in the end is in charge of each of His children's discipline. I have numerous times asked God to discipline His child because I couldn't appropriately deal with a certain offending brother.

Here are a few summary statements:

  • Each Christian is enlisted in God's training program. Non-Christians are excluded.

  • God uses discipline and scourging as part of His training process.

  • Love is God's reason for disciplining each of His children.

  • Scourgings are purposeful and not mean or violent.
    ... "That we may share His holiness."

  • A Christian on his own will not do His best. He needs training.

  • The Lord pays close attention to our needs and knows best how to handle us.

The Lord is asking us not to lose sight of God's purpose through our times of discipline. It will hurt. We will be tempted to get bitter against God. We will be given plenty of tinder to start a fire of doubt that will last our lifetime. But we are admonished,

"MY SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD, NOR FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM;

God has his purpose in chastising us. We will be tempted to respond in two wrong ways:

1) Regard lightly.
In other words, we do not profit from the discipline. We don't get the point of it. This means that we will need to go through more rigorous discipline in the future.

2) Faint.
The other response is to give up. We are overwhelmed by God's hand against us. This is another way to avoid the lesson of discipline. Instead of getting more serious about improving a certain area of our life, we just give up. Often we disguise this with a veil of criticism against God.

Love will always bring us into numerous encounters with God who is training us. We should not be surprised. Instead, we should be more expectant of what God is bringing. Love is tough because the stakes are high. Give up and the child has no respect for your own ways and habits. Give up and the child will barely tolerate you. But discipline him, and you will find great training from Him.

God's Tough Love: If God Really Loves Me ...

When individuals are asked to describe God, often they describe a "Santa Claus" type of figure or a grandfatherly individual. Usually these descriptions highlight the qualities of God's kindness and gentleness, which surely do exist. But while God is kind and gentle, He is also much more. His personality and character go far deeper than these qualities alone.

Too often we describe God as we would like for Him to be, and we do not allow the Bible to fully define for us who God really is. The Bible clearly identifies God as loving. And we generally think of this love as soft and cuddly, like a teddy bear. Yet the Bible also portrays God's love as powerful and dynamic. His love is often evidenced by strength and toughness.

As we study the book of Hosea over these next few weeks, we will especially see God's tough love. Although Hosea offers passages which are difficult to interpret, we must not let these challenges sidetrack us from the obviously clear message of God's tough love.

Love's Discipline (Hosea 1:2-9)

"On that day I will break the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel" (Hosea 1:5 NAS).

God's tough love is first seen as He disciplines His people. Hosea's wife, Gomer, represents the unfaithfulness of Israel to God. Just as Gomer committed adultery against her husband, Israel was committing spiritual adultery against God.

Using the names of his children, Hosea pronounces judgment upon the nation of Israel. The names of the three children communicate the strong correction of God: Jezreel (God scatters), Lo-ruhamah (not loved), and Lo-ammi (not my people).

Just as God disciplined the nation of Israel, He disciplines His children today. When we stray from walking with Him, He works to get our attention and to bring us back to Himself. At times God's discipline may seem severe, but in reality it stems from His deep love for us (Hebrews 12:6). God's discipline is as gentle as it can be, but as harsh as it needs to be.

Think About It ... What would be more loving: For a parent to allow a child to continue in behavior the parent knows to be dangerous, or to discipline that child as necessary in order to teach and protect the child?

Love's Promise, (Hosea 1:10-11)

"Yet the number of the sons of Israel will be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered . . . You are the sons of the living God" (Hosea 1:10 NAS).

Even in the midst of announcing God's discipline, the promise of Israel's future was declared. The discipline would only be temporary, and then the promise of God's blessings would be realized. These blessings included the multiplying of Israel's population and the reuniting of Israel's divided kingdoms.

It goes without saying that discipline is never enjoyable. In fact, often we doubt God's love for us when He corrects us. Besides the assurance in Hebrews 12 that He disciplines us because He loves us, we must also realize that God's love is not based upon our "feeling loved." Instead it is based upon God's unwavering character and His never-ending promises: He will never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Great is His faithfulness (Lamentations 3:23)! He has loved us with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3).

Think About It ... In your relationship with God, would you describe yourself as having responded faithfully to His love for you? Or, like Gomer, are you still chasing after things with greater passion and desire than your love for Him?

Love's Redemption, (Hosea 3:1-5)

"Then the Lord said to me, 'Go again, love a woman who is loved by her husband, yet an adulteress, even as the Lord loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods'" (Hosea 3:1).

God directs Hosea to faithfully love his wife even when she is not deserving of his love. In so doing, Hosea illustrated God's love for His undeserving people, Israel.

Redemption is beautifully portrayed by Hosea's anomalous marriage. We stand aghast at a woman so openly unfaithful to a man so fully committed to loving her. Yet we see in Gomer a picture of Israel and, indeed, of ourselves.

Mankind has never been deserving of God's love. But God does not love us because we are good: God loves us while we are still sinners, and He demonstrates that love through Christ dying for our sins (Romans 5:8). Jesus Christ redeemed us by paying the penalty for our sins. And by receiving the gift of eternal life through Christ's work on the cross, we truly realize love's redemption.

Think About It ... Can you recall the moment when you accepted Jesus' death as the payment for your sins? If so, would you rate your love and zeal for Him now as great or greater than it was then?

Biblical Truth: Because God loves His people, He responds to their unfaithfulness with disciplinary actions.

"The ends justify the means" is a phrase encompassing two beliefs:

Morally wrong actions are sometimes necessary to achieve morally right outcomes.
Actions can only be considered morally right or wrong by virtue of the morality of the outcome.
Conversely, people who believe that the consequences of an immoral action are greater than those of the expected outcome will often say that the ends do not justify the means.

The implication is that good ends justify questionable means. Though such a view is implicit in many moral philosophies (especially utilitarianism), and almost all persons would be willing to commit small moral transgressions in the service of a greater good, the phrase is most often used to denote the much stronger view that any action in the service of an important enough cause is justified. This view is found in many radical political ideologies, and the atrocities committed by Jacobins, communists, capitalists, fascists, and others are often attributed to a form of moral blindness in which a powerful ultimate goal becomes an excuse to ignore ordinary moral considerations.

George Washington's family motto, "Exitus acta probat," roughly translates as "the end justifies the means" (literally, it means "the end proves action").

In some applications at least, this argument is related to the question of serving the greater good in which the means is detrimental to an individual or a small (i.e., minority) group while appearing to benefit the majority or the vaguely defined society. For example, faced with a bomb hidden in a metropolitan area, it could be considered morally justifiable to torture the person who knows where it is (assuming that under torture he would truthfully reveal information which saved the citizens). Given the belief that torture is wrong, one could consider it moral to commit that wrong in the interests of saving thousands of lives. As is often, but certainly not always, the case with this dilemma, this is a Lesser of two evils principle situation.

Utilitarian use of the ends justify the means must consider the ends to include all outcomes from the means, not just the goal outcomes; in the above dilemma, the ends would include one tortured culprit and a thousand saved civilians.

Few people will use the ends justify the means to describe their own views; instead, the phrase is often used to cast suspicion on the actions or motivations of others.

Some free-market libertarians, following Robert Nozick, characterize their views using the reversed slogan the means justify the ends.

This phrase the ends justify the means is closely associated with Machiavelli and The Prince, credited with helping to advance the colonial and modern forms of imperialism .

Most religions do not endorse the utilitarian philosophy. For example, the golden rule, held by Jesus, and the Hindu doctrine of karma would both discourage actions based on a purely utilitarian justification. The rationale behind this is the doctrine that all will come to light (all will be known, discovered) in the end and that good begets good, and also the doctrine stating that this life on earth is not the primary life, but may be called the Shadowlands.

It is virtually impossible to go through a day without using a negative mean to achieve a positive end.

Argument

This is one of the worst pieces of logic you'll find anywhere, in this debate or any other. In reality, the end frequently justifies the means.

Normally we would be opposed to cutting up someone with a knife. Yet we condone the goals of a surgeon who does exactly that.

Normally we would be opposed to killing a person. Yet we condone the goals of a self-defender who does exactly that.

Normally we would be opposed to poisoning someone with a deadly virus. Yet we condone the goals of a vaccination nurse who does exactly that.

Similar examples gleaned from real life are too numerous to mention. Opposed to inflicting pain on anyone? Then your aerobics instructor is guilty of sin. Opposed to depriving anyone of their freedom? Then your county jailer is a tyrant. Opposed to lying to anyone? Then you can never bluff in poker.

As far as affirmative action goes, most liberals justify the means (affirmative action goals) to achieve a desirable end (justice for harmful racial discrimination). Conservatives might argue that hiring goals are the wrong way to go about correcting racial discrimination, or that such discrimination doesn't exist, or at least is not harmful. But what they can't argue is that the end doesn't justify the means.

Does The End Justify The Means?

Does the end justify the means? Can it sometimes be right to use a bad means to achieve a good end? Don't the conditions of human life require some shadiness and deceit to achieve security and success?

First, let's try to understand the sense in which the word "justifies" is used in the familiar statement that "the end justifies the means." After that we can consider the problem you raise about whether it is all right to employ any means - good or bad - so long as the end is good.

When we say that something is "justified," we are simply saying that it is right. Thus, for example, when we say that a college is justified in expelling a student who falls below a passing mark, we are acknowledging that the college has a right to set certain standards of performance and to require its students to meet them. Hence, the college is right in expelling the student who doesn't.

Or, to take another example, if a man refuses to pay a bill for merchandise he did not receive, we would say that he is justified. He is in the right. But if a signed receipt can be offered to show that someone in his family received the merchandise without informing him, the store would be justified in demanding payment.

Now, nothing in the world can justify a means except the end which it is intended to serve. A means can be right only in relation to an end, and only by serving that end. The first question to be asked about something proposed as a way of achieving any objective whatsoever is always the same. Will it work? Will this means, if employed, accomplish the purpose we have in mind? If not, it is certainly not the right means to use.

But the purpose a man has in mind may be something as plainly wrong as stealing or murder. With such an end in view, he may decide that certain things will help him succeed and others won't. While he would be right, from the point of view of mere expediency, in using the former and not the latter, is he right morally in taking whatever steps might serve as means to his end? If not, then he is not morally justified in employing such means.

This brings us to the heart of the matter. Since a bad end is one that we are not morally justified in seeking, we are not morally justified in taking any steps whatsoever toward its accomplishment. Hence, no means can be justified - that is, made morally right - by a bad end.

But how about good ends? We are always morally justified in working for their accomplishment. Are we, then, also morally justified in using any means which will work? The answer to that question is plainly Yes; for if the end is really good, and if the means really serves the end and does not defeat it in any way, then there can be nothing wrong with the means. It is justified by the end, and we are justified in using it.

People who are shocked by this statement overlook one thing: If an action is morally bad in itself, it cannot really serve a good end, even though it may on the surface appear to do so. Men in power have often tried to condone their use of violence or fraud by making it appear that their injustice to individuals was for the social good and was, therefore, justified. But since the good society involves justice for all, a government which employs unjust means defeats the end it pretends to serve. You cannot use bad means for a good end any more than you can build a good house out of bad materials.

It is only when we do not look too closely into the matter that we can be fooled by the statement that the end justifies the means. We fail to ask whether the end in view is really good, or we fail to examine carefully how the means will affect the end. This happens most frequently in the game of power politics or in war, where the only criterion is success and anything which contributes to success is thought to be justified. Success may be the standard by which we measure the expediency of the means, but expediency is one thing and moral justification is another.

The Golden Rule or the ethic of reciprocity is found in the scriptures of nearly every religion. It is often regarded as the most concise and general principle of ethics. It is a condensation in one principle of all longer lists of ordinances such as the Decalogue. See also texts on Loving Kindness, pp. 967-73.

Ethic of reciprocity

The ethic of reciprocity is a general philosophical principle found in virtually all religions and moral codes, often as a fundamental rule. In Western culture, the most common formulation is known as The Golden Rule -- "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you" -- based on the Sermon on the Mount, Gospel of Matthew 7:12 of the Christian Bible. However, similar injunctions can be found in virtually all cultures and societies. Comparisons have been drawn between the principle of reciprocal ethics and karma, a concept in Hinduism.

The ethic of reciprocity should not be confused with tit for tat, revenge, an eye for an eye, retributive justice or the law of retaliation. The ethic of reciprocity is not about retaliation; it is about treating others with the same respect and consideration as one wishes to be treated. A key element of the ethic of reciprocity is that a person attempting to live by this rule treats all people, not just members of his or her in-group, with consideration.

    The affirmative version of the rule in the Egyptian, Leviticus, Confucian (art of virtue), Christian, Bahá'í, and Muslim versions call for active interactions; a logical loophole of which would allow a
    masochist to harm others without their consent. This differs from the negative/passive version of the rule, sometimes called the silver rule. George Bernard Shaw said that "The golden rule is that there are no golden rules". However it is clear that most religious understandings of the principle imply its use as a virtue toward greater love for one's neighbour rather than as a deontological or consequentialist rule.

    Level Playing Field, Fairness (in Politics)

    In practice, 'fairness' may have a variety of different, contradictory meanings.

    Fairness as Equality of Outcome

    Arguably, one way to ensure that each party and each candidate is treated fairly is to provide precisely the same opportunities and financial resources to each, irrespective of their size and popularity. The argument for giving all parties and all candidates an equal share of free television time, or financial grants, is that they all require an equal opportunity to put their case to the voters.

    Positive Discrimination

    It may be argued that 'fairness' demands positive discrimination in favour of new or small parties. According to this interpretation, the major political forces in any society already have ample chances to express themselves. Extra opportunities need, therefore, to be provided to the political outsiders to organize themselves and to put forward their views to the voters.

    Fairness Based on Political Support

    This involves the principle that small parties and fringe candidates should receive less support than the main ones. This idea may apply to the allocation of time for free electoral broadcasts on television and radio. It may apply also to financial subsidies. For example, it may be argued that only the principal candidates in a presidential election should be expected to debate with each other on national television, or that the large parties should be given more time slots for party political broadcasts than small ones.

    IF the end goal of responsible citizenship is to make every Filipino happy, then what means should we use to obtain it?

    The means we have been focusing on have largely been economic. We have to raise our level of efficiency and productivity so we can compete everywhere. Being competitive would enable us to generate many jobs and much higher levels of income. Our GDP per person would keep rising, and in a sea of wealth and affluence, we would all be much happier.

    To be sure, economic means are important. Without them we would not get anywhere. But they are not the ultimate weapons. Underlying them and giving them their clout and effectiveness are other means that are much deeper since they involve our spirit, our heart, and our mind, where ultimately the struggle for development is won or lost.

    What are these deeper means involving the spirit, heart, and mind? Furrow, written by a sage and a saint, points to them and encourages us as responsible citizens to use them assiduously. It is best that we reflect on them in the current context of our country.

    * Prayer connects each one of us directly with God, who is the source of all strength and inspiration in our personal struggle to develop our talents and realize our potentials.

    * Work enables us to be productive. In the process, it also gives us many opportunities to improve ourselves and to reach out to others so in solidarity with them we can team up for the improvement of every facet of the environment in our country and in the world around us.

    * Struggle is the constant instrument that we all need to apply even in the discharge of the small, routine, ordinary duties of each day. Since it is a constant, it eggs us on to keep going and to keep fighting. It asks us to train the spotlight of self-examination on ourselves many times during the day, and most certainly upon beginning and ending each day.

    * Suffering necessarily comes with the territory. There is no escaping from it. But there is always a positive dimension to it: It shapes and strengthens us; it makes us tough and fit for even bigger struggles ahead as we move up the pathway towards higher levels of development.

    * Penance recognizes that our feet are made of clay and that we commit mistakes and misdemeanors, both big and small. It enables us to squeeze great value out of sufferings and having to endure difficulties and setbacks: These can be offered up, in patience, and with a thirst for reconciliation with all those we have offended; above all with God against whom we have sinned.

    All these means do shape our attitude. They give flesh to our values so these are converted, in practice, into virtues. It is virtues, multiplied across our land, practiced by millions of our fellow citizens, that in the end build our nation. They are the bricks with which we can put up a great edifice for our nation. They are the constituents of the greatness of our people.

    We should give due importance to these means even as we try with all our might to use the economic means that can be forged through the values and virtues that come out of these much deeper means for nation-building.

    Prosperity and Abundance

    Abundance and prosperity, what is it? Many people have different definitions for abundance and prosperity. For one person it might be feeling the freedom to do what they love.

    For someone else it might mean having material possessions such as a car, or a house in a certain area of town. For another it might mean having the realization that once food, water and air requirements are met they have all their needs met, so anything else is a bonus.

    Our abundance and prosperity are largely a result of the thoughts and feelings we direct toward life. I invite you to understand that our thoughts are like currency we spend or save towards our destiny in life.

    Consider for a minute, the word "thought." Being a noun, you can have thought. Now imagine your thought as currency. How do you "spend" your thoughts? Do you purchase with your thought presence that which you love, or do you squander the currency of your thought on what you don’t want?

    In our bodies we have a neuro-sensory system (input or attention), and a neuro-motor (expression) system. Within the muscles of the motor system exist what are called "motor units" or "units of bodily expression." I invite you to understand that just as the neuro-motor system has "motor units", the neuro-sensory system has "attention units".

    Ultimately, at some level, consciously or other-than-consciously, your "motor units" express or output the quality of your "attention units" in much the same way a binary computer expresses the quality of what is input. You have probably heard the saying, "Garbage in equals garbage out."

    We have all heard the law of physics quoted "Nature abhors a vacuum" have we not? Nature fills vacuums if we fail to fill them. We either fill our "vacuum" of life by spending our currency on what we most value or we soon find that nature, AKA universal law, AKA universe has filled in the blanks in the absence of our attention.

    You may already be having the thought, "How do I think about not thinking about something without finding myself thinking about it?" For example, if you were already trying not to think about a juicy, yellow and sour lemon in your mouth, right now you might already be experiencing your mouth watering from the imagined juicy yellow lemon.

    Realize that you cannot not think about something, at least at some other- than-conscious level, by trying to avoid it, but you can spend your thought on something of a higher order. The more you invest your currency of thought toward what you love, the less currency you have left to spill over into that which you do not want.

    How can you more wisely spend your currency of thought? One way is by changing your questions.

    Here’s an example: I consulted with someone in New York . Ann was an owner of a property management company that managed properties in the area. She had me fly out to consult with her about her business and to lead a workshop with her employees.

    During her initial consultation, I asked Ann what was her most dominant thought? She answered, "I keep asking what I did wrong to make my husband leave. I think about getting even with my ex-husband." I asked her if she felt that having, "What did I do wrong?" and "Getting even with my ex-husband" as her dominant questions was serving her well?

    Was it costing her business to be ruminating on what she might or might not have done, and continue to have resentment for her former husband? She agreed that it would be wise to change her questions.

    We spent some time doing the Quantum Collapse Process that helped her to find the balance in both "good" and "bad" characteristics and to transform her resentments about her former husband. A detailed description of the Collapse Process and forms are in my book "12 Secrets for Manifesting Your Vision, Inspiration and Purpose."

    After some time Ann broke through her frustrations and resentments. She said she felt free for the first time in months, and her dominant question had changed. Her dominant question became, "How can I get my business back on track?" Ann was now able to ask higher quality questions. We then went to work on her business. She went on to have her business double in six months.

    Einstein once stated, and I paraphrase, "If I had a problem to solve, and only had an hour to solve the problem and my life depended on solving the problem, I would spend the first fifty-five minutes determining the proper question to ask, because once I had the proper question I could solve the problem in less than five minutes."

    Many people are looking for answers to problems they have not asked the proper questions about. Genius appears to be, at least in part, a result of the questions we ask ourselves. If you ask yourself and others trivial questions you will likely find yourself feeling that your life is a tragedy, much like a soap opera.

    If you ask yourself great questions, then your life will most likely begin to become very fulfilling and inspiring, with less reaction to the ups and downs, in other words a great life, a classic.

    In case you were already wondering what the other important characteristic of genius is, it is the ability to discover a hidden order within apparent disorder, and the ability to have a perception of balance within apparent unbalance, symmetry within apparent asymmetry, a revealed beauty behind the apparent ugliness of life.

    One way we waste our mental resources is through what have been called "awfulizing," or exaggerating out of proportion away from the truth about an event, person, place or thing. In awfulizing we tend to make more of a bad thing of something, and less of a good thing of something than it is.

    Conversely, "wonderfulizing," or making more of a good thing of something, and less of a bad thing of something than it is, is another way we overspend our attention units.

    Another way we squander our attention units is by not directing attention toward what is true and significant in our lives. We squander our attention units by directing them at tangents or trivia. This way we focus the majority our thought currency toward minor considerations instead of major considerations in life.

    Why do we squander our units of thought? I believe that at least in part, it is because we fear our own magnificence. More specifically, I believe we fear our ability-to-respond, we fear our responsibility to our unique magnificence, perhaps because we know that to surrender to it means letting go of some parts of ourselves that can no longer run the show.

    Fear is usually accompanied by guilt. We sometimes fear the future and regret the past. Having a feeling of guilt about our past makes us feel unworthy of our hidden desires. As a result we are fearful of discovering them, or fearful of making them a reality, or both.

    "Nelson Mandela said in his inaugural speech, "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.

    You playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.

    It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. And as we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others." He was paraphrasing the Course in Miracles. Some say he was also paraphrasing Marianne Williamson.

    Another reason we sometimes unwisely invest our attention units is because we believe that life should be all pleasure and very little or no pain. We believe that in order to be "happy," life must be mostly supportive and pleasurable with little or no challenging and painful events. As a result of this unbalanced expectation we find ourselves "happy" only about half of the time. Even during the time we are "happy," we often find ourselves not present with the feeling because we are already in the back of our mind trying to strategize a way to make ourselves "happy" all the time which de-focuses our attention from our major considerations in life.

    I define true happiness as the ability to appreciate both the ups and downs, the pains and the pleasures, the support and challenges of life as we move toward something greater than ourselves, a great purpose that gives us significance and meaning.

    One more reason we sometimes squander our attention units is because we simply are not aware of our awareness. When you stop and think about it, we probably have not had much help from schooling and society in learning how to be aware of ourselves spending and saving our units of thought. Usually we have not had anyone to help us to spend and save wisely financially either.

    One way we wisely invest our thought is by periodically investing our thought in a purely pleasurable and care free way. This helps us to re-create our creativity and spontaneity of thought, feelings and actions. "Goofing off" or "daydreaming" can be a valuable resource.

    Einstein would sometimes get some of his greatest insights while shaving. How many of us have had a sudden discovery or thought while in the shower? This seems to come about best after we have been involved in concentrated and purposeful thought for sometime before our "down time". Once we take the pressure off ourselves, new insights and ideas come bubbling up.

    I invite you to realize that by changing the quality of your questions you can change your abundance and prosperity for the better as well. Begin to explore the questions that you can ask yourself and others as you discover the ones that will improve your quality of life. Some examples of questions that you can begin to ask yourself are:
    1. What lights me up and inspires me? What am I good at?

    2. What gives me and my life the most significance and meaning?

    3. What cause that is greater than myself can I devote my life toward?

    4. What are the wisest actions I can take toward fulfilling my purpose today?

    5. How can I major in what I love, minor in what I need to, let others worry about what I should do, delegate what I have to, and dump what is not necessary?

    6. How can I do what I love and love what I do and get paid well doing it?

    7. How can I do it by the inch in an cinch, until the yard is not hard, and the mile is not a pile?

    8. How can I direct my service more and more, to touch more people’s lives in less time each day?

    9. How can I save wisely for my purposeful future today?

    10. What is the greatest prayer I can offer my Creator today?

    11. What is the greatest meditation I can receive from my Creator today?

    Now, as you take a closer look at these questions and ponder them, and really begin to ask yourself them, you can find yourself beginning to experience new thoughts, and new feelings.

    New thoughts and feelings that lead to new actions leading to new directions, and to more and more fulfillment deep within you, deep down inside your heart of hearts, at the very essence of your true being.

    People, who are "following their bliss" as the great scholar Joseph Campbell called it, are living a life of significance and meaning and are devoted to a cause greater than themselves.

    Joseph Campbell followed his bliss as he chronicled the mythologies of the world, leaving a great body of work that lives on. Mahatma Gandhi certainly had a great purpose that changed the course of nations. Mother Teresa certainly lived for a cause greater than herself. The Dahli Lama certainly has a purpose greater than himself. A mother sacrificing herself so that her children can have the hope of a better life is living for a cause greater than herself.

    People who are devoting themselves to a purpose beyond themselves are blessed with an abundant heart that attracts resources to fulfill their mission. People who know from whence they have come and to whither they will go, and know that they know that they know what they are here to do, increase their probability curve of finding themselves prosperous.

    I had the good fortune to have been invited to a dinner for six where I was introduced to an astronaut by the name of Franklin Chang-Diaz. He has been on many space shuttle missions and spent a lot of time in the space station.

    In talking with him over dinner, it was readily apparent that he knew that his purpose was devoted to space exploration. He is one of the most brilliant minds, working toward the day when we will visit Mars.

    During the dinner, one of the guests began to inquire about what he did and wanted to know about how he was compensated as an astronaut working for the government. He readily admitted without reservation that he could be making much more money in the private sector, but what I noticed was something else.

    He had his own laboratory at NASA and could work until his hearts content on his pet projects to do with space exploration. In many ways he was wealthier than the wealthiest billionaire, for he had unfathomable resources at his command. As this became evident the questions ceased.

    As an aside, I began to mention to Dr. Chang-Diaz that I had read an article about plasma propulsion for space travel in Scientific American a few months before. With a very unassuming manner he let me know that he had been the author of the article.

    I could clearly see that he was certainly taking the wisest actions he could take toward fulfilling his purpose in life. He was obviously majoring in what he loved to do.

    Many years ago, when I was a student, I used be a personal trainer. I would start people with exercise "by the inch in a cinch until the yard was not hard" on a frequent basis. After a while, I increased the intensity to where they found themselves doing it "by the yard until it wasn’t so hard" and still enjoying it.

    In some time they progressed in their workouts to where they were doing it "by the mile with a smile." Then I began to train them to do more in less time as they became more efficient in their abilities.

    When a patient comes to me to restore their health and rejuvenate their life, I begin to ask questions to help me understand all that has occurred in their lives in the past. Then I begin to examine them, looking for clues as to what has caused their problem.

    I begin to ask them questions to help them begin to think about the difference between what they had thought of as health and what truly is health and then tell me what they would love in the way of vitality and rejuvenation. I then begin them with bodywork, then nutrition, then the mind and heart. We do it together "by the inch in a cinch until the yard is not too hard and the mile is not a pile." Just one step at a time gets us to where we want to go.

    When I consult with an entrepreneur or athlete, we begin by discovering where we want to improve, then we begin with baby steps at first, leading to giant steps over time.

    You can readily realize that when you were a baby you started out on your back. Then you started to flagellate your legs from side to side… then you were on your side… then your stomach...then your back…within a few weeks you started to lift your head "above water" so to speak.

    Before long you were on your hands and knees pulling yourself…then you were cross crawling…then you were climbing on things…and finally you were walking. And it is the same way in anything we desire to do. People who attract abundance and prosperity keep moving forward touching people’s lives.

    People who are prosperous and experience abundance manage to save some of the energy they have in the way of money. Saving plans begin by "the inch in cinch" as well. It is like building muscle. First you begin to exert yourself a little, then it becomes second nature. Over time with consistent savings compound interest makes your financial well being grow. "To those who have, more is given. To those who have not more is taken away."

    Gratitude is the greatest prayer we can ever offer our Creator. Inspiration is the greatest meditation we can ever receive from our Creator. Prosperous people who experience abundance know the importance of unconditional love and gratitude. Learn to look for gratitude in very crack, crevice and cranny in life.

    Focus on your purpose like a laser point of light as you birth your vision and get your calling. Affirm it as you feel the power of love for what you are to Be…Do…and Have. Write what you love. Take action with energy on the matter made available to you.
